Dennis Goldenson, AMFT

Dennis Goldenson's journey to becoming a psychotherapist has been both diverse and enriching, making his approach to therapy uniquely multifaceted. Starting off as a psychology major at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Dennis has always been captivated by the human condition and the transformative impact psychology can have on people's lives. After years of diverse experience, including six years with the U.S. Department of Commerce, four years each with Walt Disney Company and 20th Century Fox Studios in roles ranging from marketing analysis to consumer research, and 11 years in marketing, finance, and strategic planning at DTS, an audio solutions company, he decided to pivot his career. He enrolled in California Lutheran University's Counseling Psychology MFT program, marking a return to his original passion of fostering meaningful change in people's lives. Additionally, he holds a Master's degree in International Management from the University of Maryland. With a rich tapestry of experiences that span both coasts and multiple industries, Dennis brings a wealth of knowledge to his practice that informs his deeply empathetic and analytical approach to therapy.

Dennis Goldenson specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Person-Centered Therapy, areas that he finds particularly effective when working with college-aged students. Stationed at Ventura College from Monday to Thursday and maintaining a private practice in Woodland Hills on Fridays and Saturdays, Dennis tackles issues ranging from depression to social anxieties and familial relationships. The college's strong emphasis on mental health support aligns well with his goals, and he's close to achieving full licensure. However, his career hasn't been without challenges. Starting his traineeship during the Covid-19 pandemic, Dennis had to adapt swiftly to telehealth. The digital medium had challenges, including one memorable occasion where a client attempted to conduct a therapy session while on an elliptical at the gym.

For those considering a career in psychotherapy, Dennis Goldenson offers valuable insights. First and foremost, he emphasizes the critical need for therapists in today's world, suggesting that the sheer demand for mental health services makes the profession immensely fulfilling. "You'll come away feeling very valued for what you do," he asserts. On the topic of career changes, Dennis, who pivoted to psychotherapy in his mid-50s, encourages people to listen to their gut instincts. While acknowledging the bumps along the way, he insists that age can be an asset, bringing invaluable life experiences to the practice of mental health. Finally, he points out the personal benefits of a career in therapy, including self-improvement and deeper relationships with family: "I can go to bed at night feeling good about what I've been able to contribute in this line of work, and that's important.”

Dennis has been a member of the San Fernando Valley CAMFT for nearly a year, a chapter he joined after winning a scholarship for membership. He appreciates the organization for two primary reasons: the ongoing educational opportunities and the invaluable networking. Monthly trainings on varied topics help him stay on top of current trends in psychotherapy, while networking with other therapists enriches his practice and sense of community. "It's good to learn from each other," he notes. Dennis is also considering taking on an organizational role once he becomes fully licensed, underlining his commitment to professional development and contributing to the broader therapeutic community.

When it comes to misconceptions about therapy, Dennis Goldenson often finds himself debunking the idea that therapeutic change can occur overnight. "Therapy is a process," he asserts, emphasizing the need for both therapist and client to be patient. For college students, many of whom have never experienced therapy, Dennis invests time in psychoeducation to manage expectations.

As for self-care, Dennis prioritizes exercise, aiming for 3-4 sessions per week. This routine, he says, significantly improves his productivity and mental health. He also enjoys walking his two dogs and spending quality time with his family, including his three kids and wife. A former musician, Dennis finds solace in playing the keyboard and piano.

Dennis Goldenson operates out of Woodland Hills, working under the supervision of Ariel Cohen. With a specialization in children, adolescents, and the college-aged population, Dennis employs a blend of CBT, Solution-Focused, and Person-Centered therapies to address issues like depression, anxiety, and transitional challenges.
