Melissa Shepherd-Williams, LMFT is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. In her practice, she engages individuals in cultivating or reconnecting with their agency to thrive in personal and professional environments, especially following burnout. This work is supported by cultural and historical context, such that a fuller story helps in creating new tools to move beyond surviving. Training in trauma studies within the African American, Afro Latinx and Latinx communities adds to her offerings in listening with empathy. As a native from Panama with roots in the Caribbean, she speaks Spanish fluently, which serves well in many therapy sessions. Her book titled Living Deliciously: Recipes to Welcome Joy into Our Lives is a compilation of her newsletters including exercises and reflections on how to “squeeze the juice” out of life. The latest book, From Burnout to Bliss, adds to her creation of learning tools for preventing and emerging from a sense of being stuck professionally and personally. |

Gina Balit—President's Message The chapter closed out August with our annual — but very different this year - social networking event. We welcomed all to a fun evening for a concert in the park. We networked with new and familiar faces an hour prior and got a chance to enjoy each other's company, ate and danced, in a casual setting afterwards. As summer comes to an end and we head into fall this month, expect a regular membership meeting on September 10th, a presentation on Healing the Helping Professional with Melissa Shepherd-Williams, and 2 member speaker meetings in October and November. Attend our September meeting to find out . . . Read Gina’s full message |

Charlyne Gelt—Cinema Therapy: Barbie If you were raised in the 60s, or even if you were a parent raising a child in the 60s, you just had to know that Barbie was the ideal model to which girls of that time (as well as some of their mommies) aspired. This model, unfortunately, hammered emotional inadequacy into young girls who tried but never reached this goal: tall, long legs, blue eyes, long blond hair, and a perfect body. If you were raised in the 60s, or even if you were a parent raising a child in the 60s, you just had to know that Barbie was the ideal . . . Read Charlyne’s full review |

Kim Scott—Embracing the Third Act As we all know, the population is aging. At times it is negatively referred to as a “Gray Tsunami,” which the younger generation will be left to “deal with.” At other times, in a more neutral vein it is called the “Graying of America.” But however, you label this trend, the 65+ population is growing, and they are not the grannies and gramps of yesteryear who had much shorter life expectancies. They are not silently fading into the background and dying soon after they retire. In fact, in the 1950s the average life expectancy was 68 and now it is hovering close to 80. And the Baby Boomers who were born between 1946 and 1964 are 73 million strong, second only . . . Read Kim’s full column |
