Treating children & teens is very different than working with adults in psychotherapy -- the communication is non-verbal, the rhythm of the session is erratic, the goals of young clients are often at odds with the parents who refer them and measuring success is complicated.
This presentation will address Donald Winnicott's concepts of development, the true/false self divide and the need for play.
Activities and examples
will be presented, including:
· Why talking to kids doesn't work
· Three universal treatment goals
· General themes in children's play
· Which games work and why
· When and how to involve parents
The second half of this presentation will focus
on the needs of teens in psychotherapy.
· Building trust and rapport with teens
· Helping teens with confidence
· Dealing with teens' and parents' resistance
· Helping teens acknowledge and express emotional needs
· Defining "normal" adolescence
