"Criminally Charged: Postpartum Psychosis - Facts and Fictions"

with Diana Lynn Barnes, Psy.D., PMH-C

There are more psychiatric hospital admissions around the childbearing years than at any other time in the female life cycle. Although postpartum psychosis is rare, occurring in only 1 or 2 out of every thousand women who give birth, it is a potentially life-threatening illness that can put both mother and infant at risk of harm. Psychosis in women who have given birth looks characteristically different than for women who are not postpartum, and as a result, is often misdiagnosed. This presentation covers the constellation of symptoms and risk factors to consider when assessing and diagnosing. Discussion will include the relationship between childhood trauma and vulnerability to psychotic illness during the postpartum period along with the issues that surface when women are criminally charged.

    Learning Objectives

In successfully completing and attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

    1. Use a woman's reproductive history to identify at least 2 risks for serious

    perinatal illness.

    2. Discuss and identify 2 neurobiological impacts of childhood trauma on

    reproductive mental health.

    3. List 5 symptoms of postpartum psychosis.

    4. Describe the relationship between postpartum psychosis and altruistic filicide.

"The 1-2-3's for Treating Resistant Teens"

with Kent Toussaint, MA, LMFT 44685, LPCC 235

The 1-2-3’s for Treating Resistant Teens is a dynamic and practical workshop designed for clinicians working with adolescents who struggle to engage in therapy. This course draws from well-established psychological principles, most notably Carl Rogers’ Humanistic Theory, and focuses on effective methods to build trust, rapport, and therapeutic alliance with resistant teenage clients. Emphasizing authenticity, curiosity, and unconditional positive regard, the workshop provides clinicians with actionable tools for fostering meaningful connections with adolescents who did not initiate therapy in the first place.

Participants will explore the psychological underpinnings of resistance,

understanding it not as defiance, but as a natural protective response rooted in

anxiety, mistrust, and previous negative adult interactions. Through this lens,

resistance is reframed as an opportunity to model safe, respectful, and affirming relationships.

By the end of the workshop, attendees will be equipped with a set of creative, research-informed strategies for transforming therapeutic resistance into relational opportunity—one that supports self-actualization, emotional resilience, and personal growth in adolescent clients.

    Learning Objectives

In successfully completing and attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

    1. Identify 3 key reasons why adolescents often resist therapy and how these relate to developmental and relational factors.

    2. Demonstrate 3 rapport-building techniques that increase engagement and trust with adolescent clients.

    3. Apply at least 2 strategies for reframing client resistance as a tool for therapeutic alliance building.

    PRESENTER

California’s Medi-Cal system is complex and ever-changing. Ms. Jasper will review Medi-Cal’s requirements for telehealth services, provider addresses and how providers who offer “remote-only” services can apply for an exemption from Medi-Cal’s place of business requirements. Ms. Jasper will offer practice tips and resources Medi-Cal providers may use to strengthen their recordkeeping practices in anticipation of audits. Finally, Ms. Jasper will offer general resources to support providers as they navigate the Medi-Cal system, including resources for those providing care to dual eligible patients and caregivers.

"Working With Infidelity: After the Affair, Who Owns the Relationship?"

    with Marty Klein Ph.D.

Although most therapists say they use a “systems approach” to infidelity, it’s hard to maintain that perspective when cases are conceptualized as involving a selfish Betrayer and a victimized Betrayed.

The idea that the Betrayer has to beg forgiveness for an undefined time period and accept whatever relationship the Betrayed demands is a disservice to both parties.

Successful treatment must also involve the Betrayer’s clear insights about the emotional, psychological, and practical reasons for breaking their promise of fidelity. Facilitating this can be aggravating work for any therapist.

Course participants will learn fresh ways of looking at affairs, fidelity, and sexuality—so that they can better evaluate patients, sort out individual and relationship issues, and help people heal from the experiences of powerlessness, disorientation, grief, rage, and damaged self-esteem that are common on both sides of betrayal.

    Learning Objectives

In successfully completing and attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

    1. Explain 3 ways that power dynamics are often present in infidelity cases.

    2. Name 3 intrapsychic issues that are often involved in infidelity cases.

    3. Name 3 features that typically contribute to successful reconciliation after

    infidelity.
