Flashes, Hunches, and Gut Feelings:
The Centrality of Clinical Intuition

Clinical intuition is at the heart of effective psychotherapy. This is something all practicing clinicians understand in embodied fashion, yet to date few formal writings or trainings address the topic. This presentation combines an experiential approach to clinical intuition with a scientific one. Alongside presenting lots of original art, underlying neural circuitry that connects our powers to care and heal with the brains and bodies of other mammals will be identified.

Dr. Terry Marks-Tarlow, PhD [www.markstarlow.com] is currently working in a private practice setting, treating adults, adolescents, and couples. Her specialties include deep transformation, creative self-expression, and mind/body issues. She speaks and trains nationally and internationally and teaches at the Reiss Davis Child Study Center in Los Angeles. She is also the author of the book “Awakening Clinical Intuition: An Experiential Workbook for Psychotherapists,” which received the 2015 Gradiva Nomination for Best Book; “Clinical Intuition in Psychotherapy: The Neurobiology of Embodied Response;” and “Psyche’s Veil: Psychotherapy, Fractals and Complexity.” Finally, she is the curator and co-producer of “Mirrors of the Mind 4: The Psychotherapist as Artist,” a visual and performing arts exhibition.
