"Emotional Processing in Psychotherapy to Facilitate Emotional Change, based on Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) Approach"

Note:  Presented in-Person and on Zoom (Webinar).

The ability to identify, accept, understand and regulate our feelings has a positive correlation with successful relationships and a stronger sense of self.   This workshop will provide therapist with the specialized skills in processing emotions productively in psychotherapy from the Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) approach.

This workshop will include emotions automatically generated by the amygdala - ie, primary adaptive, primary maladaptive, secondary reactive, and instrumental emotion.  Each type of emotion response will be defined, we will look at the differences, and how to appropriately manage each in session.

The two main therapeutic tasks in EFT are: self-critical split and unfinished business.  Each will be defined along with how to handle these tasks in session.  Based on the EFT principles, the best result in therapy comes from working with the clients’ emotional process rather than content of their stories.  Therapists assist clients to gain insight, and to transform the problematic emotional processes, by accessing their heart felt needs and healthy adaptive emotions.

Learning Objectives

In successfully completing and attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain three reasons for focusing on emotions.
  2. Distinguish between four different types of emotional processes generated by the amygdala.
  3. Name two of the main therapeutic tasks in EFT-l.

Presenter:

Ladan H. Safvati, LMFT, ATR, Certified EFT-l Therapist

is the founder and director of Southern California Institute of Emotion Focused Therapy, approved by the International Society for EFT. She has completed extensive training in Emotion Focused Therapy with individuals since 2012 with Dr. Leslie Greenberg and Dr. Robert Elliott, Co-founders of EFT. She explains her experience with EFT as life changing personally and professionally, an approach that equipped her with deeper understanding of emotions and a solid structure in how to use emotional processing in session to assist clients in healing their past wounds and problematic emotional processes. Since the establishment of the SoCal Institute of EFT in 2017, Ladan has organized and hosted many experiential EFT trainings with the masters and originators of EFT and facilitated the experiential parts of these trainings, along with the pioneers, helping clinicians learn EFT skills experientially through their own experiences during skill practices. She also provides supervision to clinicians who are pursuing certification in EFT and runs monthly EFT support groups on Zoom with participants from all over the world to assist them in their learning experiences.

In her private practice, Ladan has been using EFT to provide psychotherapy services to individuals suffering from depression, anxiety and complex trauma, and to couples with past traumatic experiences. She is using the EFT theory and principles in working with children, parents and families in her practice and has witnessed great transformation in her clients.
