Membership Meeting - In Person

Julie Brams, MA, LMFT

    "Earth-Based Psychology-

What It Is and Why It Matters"

Note:  In-Person

In this workshop, clinicians of all levels will gain a greater under- standing of the foundational premises, current research findings, and application of Ecotherapy as a stand-alone or integrated treatment for a variety of diagnoses including but not limited to anxiety, depression, PTSD, and ADHD.

Ecotherapy is based on the premise that people experience greater psychological health when they are in sensory connection with their natural environment. Our current disconnection with nature is widening due to increasing technologically driven and man-made environments. As a result, anxiety, depression, and physical illness are on the rise. Ecotherapy is a research-based model that improves psychological well-being by providing people with restorative experiences in the natural world allowing them to understand and repair their relationship with nature.  Participants will learn about current research and applications of nature therapy, specifically the Japanese practice of Shinrin Yoku, and its Western counterpart ANFT-style Forest Therapy.

Learning Objectives

In successfully completing and attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the theoretical premise of Ecopsychology and Ecotherapy.
  2. Identify two effects on brain functioning that occur when experiencing the natural world.
  3.  Describe two differences between Japanese Shinrin Yoku and ANFT-style Forest Therapy.
  4. Explain when a nature therapy experience would be useful in treating someone with anxiety, depression, or other focus of treatment.
  5.  Describe two differences between Nature Therapy, nature-assisted therapy, and a common outdoor activity in nature.

Presenter:

Julie Brams, MA, LMFT is an Earth-based psychotherapist, Vipassana meditation practitioner/teacher, certified Forest Therapy Guide with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy and author.

She has over 30 years of experience in mental health and has been studying and integrating Ecotherapy into her traditional clinical work for the past 15 years. Her work integrates traditional therapies, embodied meditation, and nature therapies as a way to help people reciprocally heal themselves and the natural world. She has just completed her book, The Nature-Embedded Mind: How the Way We Think Can Heal Ourselves and Our Planet. She is dedicated to social change and environmental sustainability through reestablishing our intimate connection with the rest of nature.
