"Overcoming Chronic Pain with Pain Reprocessing Therapy"

Note:  In-Person

In this workshop, the presenter will make a case for fundamentally changing the way we approach and treat patients with certain types of chronic pain.  The existing medical paradigm assumes a physical cause for most chronic pain.   But numerous studies have shown that chronic back pain, neck pain, fibromyalgia symptoms, repetitive strain injury, headaches and other forms of chronic pain are usually not caused by structural problems in the body. Rather, these types of chronic symptoms are the result of psychophysiological processes that can be reversed. This is known as neuroplastic pain.

This presentation will explore the role of psychotherapy in the treatment of neuroplastic pain.  Participants will gain an understanding of how neuroplastic pain works and how to assess for neuroplastic pain.  We will also delve into the components of Pain Reprocessing Therapy, an evidence based protocol which retrains the brain to interpret and respond to signals from the body properly,

subsequently breaking the cycle of chronic pain.

Learning Objectives

In successfully completing and attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify at least 2 key differences between structural and neuroplastic pain.
  2. List at least 5 criteria for assess for neuroplastic pain.
  3. Name 3 components of Pain Reprocessing Therapy.

Presenter:

Melany Cohen, LMFT is a California-licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a certified Clinical Hypnotherapist. She received a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University in 2012. She also completed an extensive training in Clinical Hypnotherapy, with an emphasis on medical hypnosis and pain management.  She completed a two-year internship at Counseling West, a community mental health center in Sherman Oaks, where she worked with clients of different ages and backgrounds utilizing a psychodynamic and Jungian approach to therapy.  She went on to complete her 3000 Associate hours at Passages Treatment Center, a holistic drug treatment facility, where she provided counseling and hypnotherapy to adults with a special focus on addictive and compulsive behaviors, insomnia and pain relief.  In 2017, she had the wonderful opportunity to become a Staff Therapist and Supervisor at the Pain Psychology Center in Beverly Hills, where she continues to see clients and supervise associates.  She currently facilitates healing workshops for the Pain Reprocessing Therapy Center as well as a consultation group for clinicians who are trained in Pain Reprocessing Therapy. Melany is also trained in Brainspotting, a brain-body therapy that focuses on identifying, processing, and releasing emotional/physical pain and trauma.
