"Nutrition is a Social Justice Issue:

Unraveling the Commercial Determinants

of Health"

Note:  In-Person

In this workshop, the emphasis will be on mental health outcomes, including disordered eating, depression, and antisocial/aggressive behavior. The research discussed will emphasize historically marginalized groups, including those with criminal justice involve- ment, and offer potential solutions for “food justice.” Lastly, the presentation highlights ways that eating disorder professionals can be more involved in reshaping norms, disrupting the status quo, and improving public perception.

In recent years, the social determinants of health (SDOH) have received long-overdue attention in public health, mental health, nutrition, and medicine. To truly understand health disparities, we must also understand the commercial determinants of health (CDOH), defined as the “systems, practices, and pathways through which commercial actors drive health and equity.” Given the scale of the ultra-processed food industry, these determinants are increasingly crucial in the nutrition field. Commercial entities that focus solely on profit can damage human health. This presentation will cover topics related to food crime, environmental health, and ultra-processed food addiction.

Learning Objectives

In successfully completing and attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

    1. Define 2 practices that collectively characterize Commercial Determinants of Health, particularly in nutrition.
    2. Identify 2 research citations that support the notion of ultra-processed foods as having addictive potential and contributing to poor mental health and criminality.
    3. Explain 3 ways eating disorders professionals can navigate these controversies, elevate the field of nutrition, and improve public perception.
