Membership Meeting - Webinar

Yaotl Mazahua, LCSW

"Reclaiming the Balance of Energies: Western Patriarchal Values vs Indigenous World View"

Note:  Webinar

In this workshop, we will engage in an important conversation about patriarchy, its influence on our lives, our relationships, our workplaces, and even our dreams. We’ll explore how living in a male-centered society has shaped our experiences, from parenting to personal aspirations. Beyond simply examining its effects, we’ll also look to indigenous ancestral wisdom for insights to deconstruct our values and actions formed from the patriarchal structure of Western society.

By considering the matriarchal viewpoint and matrilineal traditions seen in most indigenous cultures, we will uncover new ways to create healthier dynamics and discover interventions to utilize in our modern lives to foster balance, strength, and well-being - for both clients and healthcare practitioners.

Learning Objectives

In successfully completing and attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Define the meaning of patriarchy and discuss the origins of the concept.
  2. Identify 3 ways the concept of patriarchy has influenced Western society’s values.
  3. Define the meaning of matriarchy and identify 2 matrilineal traditions observed in indigenous cultures.
  4. Discuss how the use of a matriarchal perspective assists in the decolonization of mental health practices.
  5. Identify 2 interventions using a matriarchal lens which can assist clients & practitioners to achieve increased life balance & amp; wellness.

Presenter:

Yaotl Mazahua, LCSW, is Raramuri/Mazahua and holds a BA in Cultural Anthropology and an MSW from CSUN. Yaotl has worked with probation youth, homeless parolees, and children and families; however, working with probation youth is his forte. Yaotl considers himself an “Artivist” inspired by the Zapatista struggle in Chiapas. He continues to provide healing and enlightenment through music and art. From punk rock to hip hop, to his indigenous roots as a basis for resilience, he survived gang activity and racial violence while sorting out and addressing the ongoing mental health challenges of colonialism, which remains a work in process. Because music saved his life for the better, it inspired a commitment to social justice and decolonizing.

Today, he is honored to pay it forward by sharing perspectives via his musical endeavors. Yaotl continues writing and performing social justice music. The Iconoclast, his first band, is an anarcho-peace punk band. Aztlan Underground (aka Anahuak Underground) is an extension of the aforementioned with a focus on decolonization and reconnecting indigenous people as human beings on Mother Earth. Yaotl is also a supervisor children’s social worker, fatherhood group facilitator, and aspires to indigenize clinical approaches to wellness.
