In Person - Membership Meeting - In Person

Denise Torres, MS, LMFT
"Culture and Trauma: Like Oil and Water"
This training will encourage self-reflection on the participant's own cultural biases and how they might impact interactions with individuals from different backgrounds. Participants will also gain information about diverse cultural perspectives on trauma, healing practices, and communication styles. Specific emphasis will be placed on the importance of respecting and valuing cultural differences, avoiding stereotypes, and adapting approaches to be culturally appropriate and deepen the understanding of when individuals feel understood and respected, they are more likely to build trust with their providers. Finally, this training will reinforce research that shows that when services are culturally relevant, individuals are more likely to seek and engage with help, and that culturally sensitive approaches can lead to more effective and lasting positive change.
Learning Objectives
In successfully completing and attending this presentation, participants will be able to:
1. Identify 3 different ways in which to approach trauma informed care with at least two different cultures.
2. Describe 2 ways in which an individual can maintain the cultural awareness
necessary to provide culturally aware trauma informed care.
3. Identify 2 different culturally appropriate trauma-informed care activities which will deepen your understanding of your own cultural trauma- informed care knowledge.
Denise Torres, MS, LMFT, has provided Mental Health services to the community for almost a decade. During her work in a Department of Mental Health contracted agency, Denise has gained extensive knowledge regarding trauma, and how it impacts the brain, behavior, physical/emotional health and overall social relationships. Over the past 4 years during her work at a non-profit agency, Denise has facilitated trainings on this subject in multiple settings and to multiple audiences. Denise has also provided mental health therapy to families, children, adolescents and adults who have experienced traumatic events in their life. In her ongoing work to support her community, Denise has also had the opportunity to provide Mental Health Consultation to providers and teachers who work with children daily. With Mental Health Consultation, Denise has developed an additional niche in which she can further support her community to provide trauma informed care. As a current Clinical Supervisor, Denise remains in a parallel process of learning with her supervisees, as well as share her experience further.
