"The 1-2-3's for Treating Resistant Teens"
with Kent Toussaint, MA, LMFT 44685, LPCC 235

The 1-2-3’s for Treating Resistant Teens is a dynamic and practical workshop designed for clinicians working with adolescents who struggle to engage in therapy. This course draws from well-established psychological principles, most notably Carl Rogers’ Humanistic Theory, and focuses on effective methods to build trust, rapport, and therapeutic alliance with resistant teenage clients. Emphasizing authenticity, curiosity, and unconditional positive regard, the workshop provides clinicians with actionable tools for fostering meaningful connections with adolescents who did not initiate therapy in the first place.
Participants will explore the psychological underpinnings of resistance,
understanding it not as defiance, but as a natural protective response rooted in
anxiety, mistrust, and previous negative adult interactions. Through this lens,
resistance is reframed as an opportunity to model safe, respectful, and affirming relationships.
By the end of the workshop, attendees will be equipped with a set of creative, research-informed strategies for transforming therapeutic resistance into relational opportunity—one that supports self-actualization, emotional resilience, and personal growth in adolescent clients.

Learning Objectives
In successfully completing and attending this presentation, participants will be able to:
1. Identify 3 key reasons why adolescents often resist therapy and how these relate to developmental and relational factors.
2. Demonstrate 3 rapport-building techniques that increase engagement and trust with adolescent clients.
3. Apply at least 2 strategies for reframing client resistance as a tool for therapeutic alliance building.
