"How to Work with Families in High-Conflict Custody Matters"

This workshop introduces mental health professionals to Attachment Family Therapy as a tool to help high-conflict families and addresses parent-child relationships. This training provides practical strategies to help parents transition from reactivity to emotional responsiveness, thereby repairing strained family relationships.

Learning Objectives:
1. List two common fears expressed by parents in high-conflict custody cases.
2. Identify at least three reasons a child may reject a parent.
3. Name the four stages of the court-involved family therapy model.
4. Identify the three key components of attunement that are used to support the parent who is estranged from their child.

Cathy Himlin, LMFT, LPCC, has more than thirty years’ experience as a licensed marriage and family therapist and is also a licensed professional clinical counselor. She specializes in family law and dependency cases involving high-conflict families. Himlin serves on the San Diego Family Law Bar Association’s Mental Health Committee and is a member of CAMFT and the AAMFT. She has developed several child-centered trainings for family law attorneys, therapists, and parents. Himlin’s new book, The Rejected Parent: Rebuild Your Relationship with Your Child During a Divorce or Custody Dispute, will be published in the Spring of 2026.

This course is intended for beginning to advanced mental health professionals.
Course meets the qualifications for 1.5 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Course evaluations will be sent and CE completion certificates will be awarded to participants that attend the entire presentation and complete the course evaluation within 48 hours of the speaker presentation.

Refund Policy
Requests for refunds must be in writing and received by SFV-CAMFT before one week prior to the event. A $2 administrative fee will be deducted for cancellation of a paid event, through the cancellation deadline. There will be no changes or cancellations received after one week prior to the event (this includes no shows and arriving late to the presentation on the day of the event). The President has discretion to issue refunds that do not comply with the policy. To request a refund, email sfv.camft@gmail.com.
