COURSE DESRIPTION
The number one thing I get asked when I say I work with teens is how do I get them to talk? Which is very confusing to me since most of the clients I see would happily talk for an entire day if I gave them the opportunity. Teens want to connect, just on their terms. What are the terms? Their interests or subcultures. Take gamer culture for example, there’s terminology that is highly specific to other gamers just like therapy language is specific to therapists. Knowing some key phases or even just what something is takes you from an outsider to a trusted adult.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Define subcultures
2. Identify 3 teen subcultures
3. List 4 subcultures that therapists are a part of
PRESENTERS
Cassidy Russell is a geek therapist and a lifelong gamer, reader, and nerd. She has presented in the past on Anime and Video Games in therapy. Knowledge in geek culture has always come in handy in her private practice that focuses on individual therapy for teens and young adults. Use of terms has given her automatic buy in from many of her clients who see her as more than an authority figure, but a trusted adult who will see the magic in their interests instead of brushing them off.

Ascend's mandatory family program is clinically robust, requiring a minimum of 5 hours of parent/family treatment per week and a 2-day, on-site family intensive every 6 weeks. The Center for Cultural Affirmation is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting mental health and wellness among African Americans and other people of color through culturally-affirming initiatives. Our mission is to create a safe and supportive space where individuals can work towards achieving a positive sense of self, self-esteem, and self-concept.
Our therapy organization provides compassionate, evidence-based care to individuals, couples, and families across the lifespan. We specialize in serving young adults, older adults, children and adolescents, couples, and families, addressing their unique challenges and promoting mental health and well-being. Our services are culturally affirming for BIPOC communities, leading with cultural humility as the foundation for building the therapeutic relationship.
We believe that mental health is a critical component of overall well-being and that cultural affirmation plays a key role in supporting the mental well-being of marginalized communities. Our goal is to provide access to culturally-sensitive and effective mental health services that address the unique mental health challenges faced by African Americans and other people of color. We are committed to promoting equity, social justice, and empowering individuals to live their lives to the fullest.

Course meets the qualifications for 1.5 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
Course evaluations will be sent and CE completion certificates will be awarded to participants that attend the entire presentation and complete the course evaluation within 48 hours of the speaker presentation.

Refund Policy: Requests for refunds must be in writing and received by SFV-CAMFT before one week prior to the event. A $2 administrative fee will be deducted for cancellation of a paid event, through the cancellation deadline. There will be no changes or cancellations received after one week prior to the event (this includes no shows and arriving late to the presentation on the day of the event). The President has discretion to issue refunds that do not comply with the policy. To request a refund, email sfv.camft@gmail.com.
